Meet Catherine Cella of Joyful Reflections Photography

Our featured family portrait was done by Joyful Reflections Photography

If you’ve visited our website, you’ve no doubt seen the photo of my lovable and crazy family featured on our home page.

Family photos are such special things, aren’t they? They capture a slice-of-life moment of your family at different times during its growth and evolution. Looking back at them evokes so many emotions and memories.

We were lucky to have a fantastic photographer for our family photo shoot, Catherine Cella of Joyful Reflections Photography. She took the time to get to know my family and make each one of us feel comfortable. The results were great family moments we’ll always be able to cherish.

Get to Know Catherine

I recently talked with Catherine about her love of photography and how it got started. I wanted to share some of her comments with you so you could also get to know this talented woman better. Here are some of the things she revealed about herself:

Q. How did you discover your talent?

A. I discovered my love for photography during my high school years and was very active in our photography club. I loved playing and learning with my first film camera, a Pentax K1000. It’s amazing to see how the industry and cameras have changed throughout the years and to think you can now capture photographic moments on a phone!

Photography has changed, photos can be taken on a phone today.

Q. What is your favorite season to photograph?

A. The newness of Spring and all the delicate flowers and trees blooming with colors that I feel are so feminine and pretty. I love creating floral arrangements to photograph as well as high school seniors, moms, and children surrounded by the beauty of our countryside. (See Catherine’s portfolio.)

Q. If you had a time machine and could photograph anyone or any event, who or what would it be?

A. If I could go back and photograph any moment in time I would have to say the Birth of Christ. To see this very special child being born in a stable with Mary and Joseph near by and the Angels that appeared. To witness the wise men that came to see the newborn child and to be there and be a part of this most historic moment ever… wow, it would be life changing for sure!

Q. What have been some of your favorite moments as a photographer?

A. This was not any easy question for me to answer because I have been a photographer for over forty years! So it feels like it’s always been a part of my life. So many amazing experiences… I have photographed all over the world and very special moments right here in the small state of Connecticut, in the little town of Ellington.

Here are a few of my most recent moments.:

I was truly honored when Lori Spielman, First Selectmen for the Town of Ellington requested to have an amazing 6’ x 8’ wall mural of Oakridge Dairy Farm cows I photographed displayed in our town hall. I will forever be grateful for this opportunity to have such a large piece of my work displayed in such a public place as our town hall.

Last Father’s Day a client videotaped her husband opening images I took of his two daughters and wife. She shared it with me, and it moved me in such a profound way. It was so touching to see his expressions and emotions while opening his gifts. Tears were filling his eyes. It’s moments like this that make me realize how blessed I am to be able to follow my passion. These are the kind of moments that help to remind me of the importance of prints over digital images to have and to cherish.

Life is a gift, cherish it, and always remember… if a photographer falls in love with you, you will live forever. Never stop capturing life’s special moments.

For over 10 years I visited the island of Jamaica for vacation, and along side of me, my son and I did charity work on our own. We spent time getting to know a wonderful group of people from the once known Bamboo Village of Montego Bay. Each year I would photograph these folks, their precious children, their crafts and bring them back images the following year. I can not describe how overwhelmed with joy I was to see the happiness on their faces when I presented them with their images. Images they would otherwise never have. I hope in the coming years I will be able to travel and discover other parts of this wonderful world, capturing the beauty of the people and their surroundings.

I have been honored to have my images on the front cover of Connecticut Parent Magazine.

This past summer, taking a photography class with photographers from all over the world while taking a tour through the famous Antelope Canyon in Arizona. An experience I was thrilled to have done.

There are just so many special moments I have been blessed with in all my years of photographing that I should really write a book and publish some of my images. Perhaps someday when I retire.

Q. How long have you had your business?

A. I started Joyful Reflections Photography in 2010 and have continued to grow as a photographer mastering my craft and learning everything it takes to run a successful business. I have truly enjoyed the journey and look forward to what the future has for me.
